Officials said they frequently see the results of dog fighting but can rarely find the instigators. "It's extremely hard to infiltrate that activity," said Ilke Daniel, outreach coordinator for the Humane Society of Vero Beach and Indian River County. But the Indian River County Sheriff's Office is investigating five people involved in a dog-fighting ring based on a tip Saturday. .

A mother and daughter walking through a neighborhood Tuesday night came across a 9 1/2-foot-long Burmese python. "They said we've got to call the police," said Mary Rangel, 19, whose mother and sister spotted the snake about 7:30 p.m. and kept their eyes on it until two members of the Humane Society of Vero Beach and Indian River County arrived to capture it at the corner of 102nd Court and 87th Street. The snake, believed to have either escaped from a home or released into the wild by its owner, weighs more than 40 pounds, said Ilke Daniel, outreach director for the Humane Society.
